NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Kazan and said that peaceful relations between India and China was important for regional and global peace, and stability. The two leaders held the bilateral meeting after five years, on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit at Kazan in Russia. The meeting was held two days after the two countries arrived at an agreement on border patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.
"We believe that the India-China relationship is very important not only for our people, but also for global peace, stability and progress. We welcome the consensus reached on the issues that have arisen in the last four years on the border. Maintaining peace and stability on the border should remain our priority. Mutual trust and mutual respect should remain the basis of our relations," Modi said.
Ties between the two neighbouring countries deteriorated in 2020 due to fierce clashes between the armies along the eastern Ladakh border, which led to deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and several Chinese soldiers. Both leaders welcomed the recent agreement for complete disengagement and resolution of issues that arose in 2020 in the India-China border areas.
"It's the first time for us to have a formal meeting in five years' time. China and India are both ancient civilisations, major developing countries, and important members of the Global South...For both sides, to keep to the trend of history and the right direction of our bilateral relations, it's important for both sides to have more communication and cooperation, properly handle differences and disagreements, and to facilitate each other's pursuit of development aspirations," Chinese Premier Jinping said.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of properly handling differences and disputes and not allowing them to disturb peace and tranquility. "The two leaders agreed that the Special Representatives on the India-China boundary question will meet at an early date to oversee the management of peace & tranquillity in border areas and to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question," Misri said. The relevant dialogue mechanisms at the level of foreign ministers and other officials will also be utilised to stabilise and rebuild bilateral relations, he said.
It will also contribute to a multipolar Asia and a multipolar world. The leaders underlined the need to progress bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, enhance strategic communication and explore cooperation to address developmental challenges. End
