Cyclonic storm Dana to intensify into severe cyclonic storm by Thu, says IMD

MUMBAI – The cyclonic storm "Dana" over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by early Thursday morning and cross the northern Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island from Thursday night to Friday morning, the India Meterological Department said.
Under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Odisha and gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday, the weather bureau said. It has also issued a red alert in Odisha and gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday. A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours. Jharkhand is also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during Thursday and Friday, it said.
Extremely heavy rainfall, which is equal to more than 21 cm, is likely over parts of Baleswar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsingpur, Kendujhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Kohrda, and Puri districts of Odisha on Thursday and Friday, the IMD said. Similar weather conditions are very likely over parts of South and North 24 Parganas, east and west Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, and Bankura districts of gangetic West Bengal during Thursday and Friday.
The severe cyclonic storm is likely to move with a wind speed of 100–110 kilometre per hour gusting to 120 kilometre per hour. Owing to this, the weather bureau has advised "total suspension of fishing operations" till Friday in the central and northern Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, the south interior Karnataka is likely to record heavy rains on Wednesday. Similar weather conditions are very likely over Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe till Thursday and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Friday, the weather department said.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday, and Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur on Wednesday and Thursday. End
