--IMD: Depression over eastcentral Bay of Bengal now a cyclonic storm
MUMBAI – The depression over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Dana' on Wednesday morning, the India Meteorological Department said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The cyclonic storm is about 560 km southeast of Paradip in Odisha, 630 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal, and 630 km south-southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh, it said.
The weather bureau said it is very likely that the cyclonic storm will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over northwest Bay of Bengal by early Thursday morning and cross northern the Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island from Thursday night to Friday morning. The weather system formed later is likely to move with a wind speed of 100–110 km per hour gusting to 120 km per hour.
Owing to the influence of such a weather system, the department has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal till Friday. It had predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday. Very heavy rainfall is also very likely over parts of east India on Friday, the weather bureau said. End
