India Sept crude steel output down 0.2% YoY, says World Steel Association

MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India fell 0.2% on year to 11.7 million tonnes in September, the first decline since February 2023, according to data from the World Steel Association. During the month, the country accounted for over 8% of global steel output.

 

Globally, crude steel output fell 4.7% on year to 143.6 million tonnes last month because of a decline in output in China, India, Iran, Japan, and Russia. For Jan-Sept, global crude steel production was down 1.9% at 1.39 billion tonnes, while output in India jumped 5.8% to 110.3 million tonnes.

 

Among the top 10 steel producers, Brazil, Germany, South Korea, Turkiye, and the US reported growth in output in September. In China, the world's largest producer, crude steel output dropped 6.1% on year to 77.1 million tonnes last month. For Jan-Sept, the country's output declined 3.6% on year to 768.5 million tonnes, accounting for over 55% of global production.

 

In Japan, crude steel output declined 5.8% on year to 6.6 million tonnes. Production in South Korea rose 1.3% to 5.5 million tonnes in September. The US produced 6.7 million tonnes of steel last month, up 1.2% on year, while output in Turkiye soared 6.5% to 3.1 million tonnes.

 

Steel production in Germany jumped 4.3% to 3.0 million tonnes in September. Crude steel production in Russia is estimated to have tumbled 10.3% on year to 5.6 million tonnes. Overall production in Brazil climbed 9.9% to 2.8 million tonnes, while output in Iran tumbled 41.2% to 1.5 million tonnes last month. End
