NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday reiterated at a meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin India’s stand calling for a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Modi met Putin on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit at Kazan in Russia.
Modi is on a two-day visit to the Russian Federation to take part in the BRICS summit. BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
During the meeting with Putin, Modi said India believes the conflict should be resolved peacefully. He said India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in the times to come.
"I have been in constant touch with you on the subject of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine," Modi told the Russian leader. "As I have said earlier, we believe the conflict should be resolved in a peaceful manner. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability. All our efforts give priority to humanity."
The prime minister also said the India-Russia Annual Summit in Moscow in July had strengthened cooperation between the countries in every field. "My two visits to Russia in the last three months reflect our close coordination and deep friendship,” Modi said. He also hailed BRICS, stating that the intergovernmental forum had created its own identity in 15 years and many countries of the world want to join it now.
Putin thanked Modi for accepting his invitation to visit Kazan. "I remember we met in July and had a very good discussion on several issues," he said. "We also spoke on the telephone a lot of times. I am very grateful to you for accepting the invitation to come to Kazan. Today, we will participate in the opening ceremony of the BRICS Summit... During the upcoming BRICS Summit today with other leaders, we should take some very important decisions."
Modi had earlier met Putin in July and held discussions on a range of subjects, including the war with Ukraine. Later in August, Modi visited Ukraine and met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well to reiterate India's stand that dialogue and diplomacy are key to the restoration of peace. End
