IMD predicts severe cyclonic storm hitting Odisha, West Bengal coasts Thu

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday said the depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and cross the northern Odisha and West Bengal coasts on Thursday night.
The depression is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday and a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by Thursday morning, IMD said. The severe cyclone is likely to cross the northern Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during Thursday night to Friday morning, the weather department said. Wind speed of the severe cyclonic storm is likely to be at 100–110 kilometres per hour, gusting to 120 kilometres per hour. Under this influence, the Met Department has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal till Friday.
Under the influence of the above weather system, the IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday. Very heavy rainfall is also very likely over parts of east India on Friday, the weather bureau said.
The IMD also said very heavy rainfall is very likely over south interior Karnataka on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Kerala, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh during the week and over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra on Tuesday, it said.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday, and Meghalaya and Assam on Wednesday and Thursday. Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur are also likely to get heavy rainfall during Wednesday and Friday, the weather department said. End
