NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday to take part in the 16th BRICS summit. He is scheduled to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan. The prime minister is also expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders from the BRICS nations on the sidelines of the summit. "Building upon the Annual Summit held in July 2024 in Moscow, my visit to Kazan will further reinforce the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia," Modi said in his departure statement ahead of the two-day visit. BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Modi last met Putin in July where the two leaders held discussions on a range of subjects, including the Russia-Ukraine war. The prime minister had conveyed India's stand of peaceful resolution of war through dialogue. In August, Modi visited Ukraine and held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict for "most of the time" they spent together. Modi reiterated India's stand that dialogue and diplomacy are key to the restoration of peace. Putin and Zelenskyy have earlier stated that India can play the role of a mediator in resolving the conflict. On Monday, former British prime minister David Cameron also said that India has the credibility to be a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war.

In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi also said that the expansion of BRICS, through the addition of new members last year, has added to its inclusivity and agenda for the global good. "India values the close cooperation within BRICS, which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on issues concerning the global developmental agenda, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, building resilient supply chains, promoting cultural and people-to-people connect, among others," he said.

The BRICS summit, themed 'Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security', will provide an important platform for the leaders to discuss key global issues, the Ministry of External Affairs had said earlier. End
