IMD sees cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal by Wed

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Monday said the low pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression by Tuesday morning and turn into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday. Thereafter, the weather system is likely to move northwestwards and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha-West Bengal coast by Thursday morning, the weather department said.
A cyclonic storm is an intensified low pressure system, which causes heavy rain and strong winds with speed at surface level of about 34-47 knots. Under its influence, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Odisha and gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday, the Met Department said.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to record very heavy rainfall on Monday, the IMD said. During the week, heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of south peninsular India, it said.
In view of the weather systems, the IMD said squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kilometres per hour and gusting to 60 kilometres per hour are very likely to commence from Wednesday morning. "It would gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 100-110 kmph (kilometres per hour) gusting to 120 kmph from Thursday evening to Friday morning and decrease thereafter," the weather bureau said.
The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the east-central Bay of Bengal till Thursday, adjoining areas of the west-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and Thursday, and the north Bay of Bengal and along the off Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh coasts during Wednesday and Friday.
In view of heavy to very heavy rainfall over east and southern India, the weather department advised farmers to drain excess water from standing crop fields and fruit orchards to avoid water stagnation. It has also asked the farmers to keep the harvest in safer places. End
