NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia on Tuesday and Wednesday to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. The prime minister will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders from BRICS member countries at Kazan, the venue of the summit. BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
The summit, themed 'Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,' will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The ministry said the integration of invited countries as full members of BRICS will happen during the summit. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates joined the bloc in January. "Together with the new members, BRICS would emerge as a stronger voice of the Global South. India supported the process of seamless and smooth integration of new members into the various BRICS cooperation mechanisms," the ministry said.
BRIC, as a formal grouping, started after the meeting of the leaders of Russia, India and China in St. Petersburg on the margins of the G8 Outreach Summit in 2006. Saudi Arabia is yet to fully participate in the group’s deliberations.
"The expanded BRICS, with the addition of new members, has a combined population of about 3.5 billion, or 45% of the world's population. The combined economies of the members are worth more than $28.5 trillion — about 28% of the global economy," the ministry said. End
