--RBI Das on third term as governor: Not on my mind at the moment
NEW DELHI – Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das Friday said a third term as the head of the central bank is not on his mind right now. "At the moment, that is certainly not on my mind," said Das, when asked at the Bloomberg India Credit Forum in Mumbai if he would accept another term as RBI governor.
His term is set to end on Dec. 9. Das was appointed RBI governor in December 2018 for three years and was then given a three-year extension in 2021. "In my mind what remains is that up to Dec. 10, there are certain items which were initiated, we need to conclude them. We need to ensure they reach their desired conclusion," the governor said.
Das said the RBI is looking to issue regulatory guidelines based on the comments the central bank has received on several discussion papers it had floated. "My effort is at the moment completely focused on completing that job and the next monetary policy meeting will also come up," he said. "Already my table is full, I have no time to think of what next. We will see."
The next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled on Dec. 4-6, with the decision on Dec. 6, three days before Das' tenure ends.
RBI Deputy Governor Michael Patra's term is also scheduled to end on Jan. 14. Informist exclusively reported earlier this week that the government is set to begin the search for a new RBI deputy governor. The finance ministry's Department of Financial Services is likely to issue a notification inviting applications for the position of deputy governor soon, Informist had reported. End
