NEW DELHI – A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case. Considering the delay in the trial, which has not even begun, and the former minister's long incarceration of 18 months, Jain was a prime candidate for the relief, the court said.
Before his arrest in 2022, Jain was minister for health, public works, and jails in the Delhi government headed by Arvind Kejriwal. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on a first information report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. In February 2023, Jain resigned from the Delhi Cabinet.
The investigating agencies claim that Jain, with the help of family members and others, acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income between Feb. 14, 2015, and May 31, 2017, when he was a minister in the Delhi government. He is also accused of laundering tainted cash through shell companies based in Kolkata.
Reacting to Jain's bail order, the Aam Aadmi Party said another conspiracy of the Bharatiya Janata Party had failed, and Jain, who, the party said, brought about a health revolution in Delhi by building "magnificent mohalla clinics", had got bail. "Today again the real face of BJP has been exposed in front of the entire country," the party said on social media platform X. End
