Water level in western India reservoirs at 36.263 bcm, 97% of capacity

MUMBAI – Water level in 50 key reservoirs in the western region of India rose slightly to 36.263 billion cubic metre as of Thursday from 36.107 billion cubic metre last week, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current water level is 97% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs compared with 89% in the corresponding period last year.
The western region includes Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra, which recorded excess to large excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon.
Of the 50 reservoirs in the region, 28 are at full capacity and 14 are almost full at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. This is mainly due to above normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon from Jun. 1 to Sept. 30. Only one reservoir's capacity was 51-60%. The capacities of rest were all above 80% of the total reservoir level, according to the report.
The water level in 155 key reservoirs of the country as of Thursday rose slightly to 157.671 billion cubic metres from 157.267 billion cubic metres last week. The current water level is 87% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres, the data showed. Water levels in the 155 reservoirs were up 20% from a year ago and 15?ove the average for the last 10 years.
The water level in the 43 key reservoirs in the southern region of India rose to 47.998 billion cubic metre as of Thursday from 47.109 billion cubic metres last week, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current water level is 88% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs compared with 48% in the corresponding period last year.
Of the 43 reservoirs in the region, 10 are at full capacity and 13 are almost full at 91-99% of the full reservoir level.
In the central region, water level in the reservoirs fell on week to 43.485 billion cubic metres from 44.103 billion cubic metres, and was 90% of the total live storage capacity against 84% in the corresponding period last year. In the eastern region, the water level in the reservoirs fell to 16.939 billion cubic metres from 17.656 billion cubic metres last week. However, the current water level is higher at 81% of the total live storage capacity from 77% in the corresponding period last year.
In northern India, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, the water level in the reservoirs rose to 12.986 billion cubic metres from 12.742 billion cubic metres last week. During the southwest monsoon, Rajasthan received excess rainfall, while Punjab and Himachal Pradesh got below normal rains. The current water level is down to 65% of the total live storage capacity from 81% a year ago, data showed.
Out of the 155 reservoirs, 146 reported more than 80% of normal storage while nine reported storage levels of 80% of normal or below that, the data showed. Of the eight reservoirs, one had storage up to only 50% of the normal level.
Since Oct. 1, India has received 50.3 mm of rainfall. The normal rainfall is 50.4 mm for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
