--BJP's Nayab Singh Saini takes oath as Haryana chief minister
NEW DELHI – Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Nayab Singh Saini Thursday took oath as the chief minister of Haryana at a grand swearing-in ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union ministers in Panchkula. The BJP has formed the government in the state for the third consecutive time after registering a historic victory in the Assembly elections held earlier this month.
Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Saini. Members of the legislative Assembly Anil Vij, Krishan Lal Panwar, Rao Narbir Singh, Mahipal Dhanda, Vipul Goyal, Arvind Kumar Sharma, Shyam Singh Rana, Ranbir Gangwa, Krishan Kumar Bedi, Shruti Choudhry, Aarti Rao, Rajesh Nagar and Gaurav Gautam also took the oath of office as state Cabinet ministers.
The ceremony was attended by chief ministers of several states ruled by the BJP and its allies, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. BJP President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, along with other central government ministers and dignitaries attended Thursday's ceremony.
On Wednesday, Saini was unanimously elected as the leader of the Haryana BJP legislature party. Later in the day, he met Governor Dattatreya at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh and staked claim to form the government in the state. Assembly polls were held in the state on Oct. 5 and results were declared on Oct. 8. The BJP, under the leadership of Saini, had won 48 seats against Congress' 37 in the 90-member Assembly. The party's vote share also increased to nearly 40% from 36.49% in 2019. The BJP's third consecutive term in Haryana is a first for any party since Assembly elections in the state started in 1967.
Saini took oath for the second time as the Haryana chief minister. In March, he took the reins of the state government after former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his council of ministers resigned amid differences between the BJP and its coalition ally in the state – Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janata Party. Positioning Saini helped the BJP counter anti-incumbency in the state.
The BJP came to power in the state for the first time on its own in 2014 and Khattar took oath as the chief minister. The party had won 47 seats in the 2014 Assembly polls. In 2019, the saffron party fell short of the majority mark of 46 as it could win only 40 seats. The BJP, however, managed to form a government in coalition with the Jannayak Janata Party, which won 10 seats in 2019, as well as several independents. End
