MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh Wednesday under the influence of a depression that has formed over southwest Bay of Bengal.

In view of these weather conditions, the Met Department issued a red alert in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh Wednesday. It also issued an orange alert in south interior Karnataka and Kerala Wednesday due to very heavy rainfall. A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 millimetres in 24 hours, and an orange alert is for rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.

The low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal on Tuesday intensified into a depression Wednesday morning, the weather bureau said. The weather system is expected to move close to Chennai during the early hours of Thursday, it added.

Squally wind speeds reaching 40-50 kilometres per hour and gusting 60 kmph are likely to prevail over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal and along and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh till Thursday noon, the Department said. It has advised fishermen not to venture into these areas till Thursday noon due to "rough to very rough sea conditions".

As a result of the impact of these heavy rains in the above-mentioned places, the weather department said there is a low to moderate risk of flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods Wednesday and Thursday. It has also advised farmers to drain excess water from fields of cotton, groundnut, pulses, maize, and rice. It has also asked farmers to postpone the sowing of rabi pulses.

In west India, the Met Department said isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Thursday. However, the weather department said there would be no significant rainfall over northwest, central, and northeast India during the week.  End
