NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet on Wednesday may approve an increase of 300 basis points in dearness allowance for central government employees, a source told Informist Media. The proposal to hike the dearness allowance is listed on the agenda for the Cabinet meeting, being convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 1030 IST on Wednesday.

The government typically hikes the dearness allowance twice a year, as per a formula recommended by the Seventh Pay Commission. In March, the Cabinet approved an increase of 400 basis points in dearness allowance and dearness relief to 50% of basic pay/pension for central government employees and pensioners, respectively, effective Jan 1. The move will benefit 4.92 million employees and 6.80 million pensioners, the government had said in a press release. End
