Domestic air passenger traffic 13 mln in Sept, up 6.4% on year

MUMBAI – India's domestic airlines carried 13.03 million passengers in September, up 6.4% from 12.25 million passengers in the same month last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a report. During Jan-Sept, domestic airlines carried 118.5 million passengers, up nearly 5% from 112.9 million in the year-ago period.
Among the top domestic airlines, only two airlines--Air India and Indigo--increased their market share in September. The market share of the Tata Group-owned Air India's market share rose to 15.1% in September, up slightly from 14.7% in August. The market share of Indigo, India's largest airline, rose to 63% from 62.4% in August. Vistara's market share fell to 10% in September from 10.3% in August. SpiceJet's market share fell to 2% in September from 2.3% in August. Akasa Air's market share fell to 4.4% in September from 4.5% in August.
In September, IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Vistara, all saw an increase in passenger load factor from the previous month, while Air India's passenger load factor remained unchanged during the latest month. SpiceJet saw a decline in the passenger load factor in September. The passenger load factor, which measures an airline's efficiency in utilising the available passengers, was the highest for Vistara at 90.9%, followed by Indigo at 82.6%.
Indigo's passenger load factor increased to 82.6% in September from 82.3% the previous month, Akasa Air's passenger load factor rose to 85.9%, up slightly from 85.5% in August. Vistara's passenger load factor rose to 90.9% in September from 88.7% the previous month. Air India was the only airline to have its passenger load factor unchanged at 80.1%. SpiceJet's passenger load factor declined to 80.4% from 81% the previous month.
Across the four metros, AIX Connect reported the best on-time performance of 70.1%. Indigo reported the next best on-time performance of 69.2% in September. It was followed by Vistara with an on-time performance of 69.1%, Air India with 68.1%, Akasa Air with 62.1%, and Alliance Air with 53.8%. SpiceJet's on-time performance was the worst at 30.4%.
The flight cancellation rate for domestic airlines in September was 0.85%, the DGCA report said. Among the major players, SpiceJet reported the highest cancellation rate of 4.12%, followed by Akasa Air at 1.11%. Vistara reported a cancellation rate of 0.88%, Indigo reported a cancellation rate of 0.62%, and Air India reported the lowest cancellation rate of 0.13%.
A total of 765 passenger complaints were received by domestic airlines in September, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried in September was about 0.59. Flight problems, the major reason for passenger complaints, accounted for 40.7% of the total passenger complaints.
On Tuesday, shares of Interglobe Aviation closed at INR 4,756.45 on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.7%. On the BSE, shares of SpiceJet closed at INR 66.47, up 1.2%. End
