NEW DELHI – The Election Commission of India on Tuesday announced that assembly elections in Jharkhand will be held in two phases—Nov. 13 and Nov. 20--and in Maharashtra in one phase on Nov. 20. Votes for both the states will be counted on Nov. 23. With the announcement of the poll schedule in both the states, the Model Code of Conduct has also kicked in.
The term of the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly ends on Jan. 5, and the term of the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly ends on Nov. 26.
In Jharkhand, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which is a part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, faces a challenge from the National Democratic Alliance, which includes the All Jharkhand Students Union, the Janata Dal (United), and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Previous Assembly elections in Jharkhand were held in 2019 in five phases between Nov. 30 and Dec. 20, while the results were declared on Dec. 23. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal contested the elections in alliance and had won 30, 16 and one seat, respectively. The BJP had won 25 seats, All Jharkhand Students Union won two seats, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha won three seats, the Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation won one seat each, and the independents won two seats. The JMM, Congress and RJD formed the government in the state.
Maharashtra is expected to see a two-way fight between the Mahayuti Alliance of the BJP, the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Maha Vikas Agadi alliance of the Congress, the Shiv Sena – Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray, and the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar. The state is currently governed by the Mahayuti Alliance of the BJP, the Shiv Sena, and the NCP.
In Maharashtra, previous assembly elections were held in a single phase on Oct. 21, 2019, and the results were announced on Oct. 24. The BJP and undivided Shiv Sena had contested elections in alliance and secured majority by winning 161 seats – BJP 105 and SS 56. The undivided NCP had won 54 seats and the Congress party won 44. The Samajawadi Party, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and Prahar Janshakti Party won two seats each. Bahujan Vikas Agadi won three seats, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Peasants and Workers Party of India, Swabhimani Paksha, Jan Surajya Shakti, Krantikari Shetkari Party and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha won one seat each. The independents won 13 seats. End
