MUMBAI – Overall vehicle despatches to dealerships in India rose nearly 13% on year to 2.46 million units in September, and exports were up slightly over 19% on year at 466,409 units, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on Monday. The overall vehicle sales volume was driven by healthy growth in two- and three-wheeler despatches in anticipation of strong demand during festivals.
In September, two-wheeler despatches rose 15.8% on year to 2.03 million units and three-wheeler despatches increased by 6.7% on year to 79,683 units, according to the data. However, passenger vehicle sales, including those of Tata Motors Ltd, fell nearly 1.4% on year to 356,752 units, and quadricycle despatches plummeted to 3 units from 88 units in September last year.
In the two-wheeler category, motorcycles continued to account for a major portion of the total despatches in September. Wholesale sales of motorcycles increased by 16.4% on year to 1.30 million units, and those of scooters increased by slightly over 14% to 672,414 units. Meanwhile, sales of mopeds surged 22.3% on year to 54,969 units.
In September, sales of three-wheelers were driven by passenger carrier despatches, which rose 10.2% on year to 65,826 units. In comparison, despatches of goods carriers rose by a little over 8% on year to 10,910 units and those of electric carts surged by 146% on year to 628 units. However, sales of electric rickshaws fell 49% on year to 2,319 units.
Among passenger vehicles, a decline in sales of small cars--which include micro, mini and compact models--weighed on overall segment despatches. Sales of small passenger cars dropped 12.8% on year to 97,564 units with most automakers reporting a decline in sales over the year-ago period. During the month, utility vehicle sales rose 6.4% on year to 206,217 units, led by growth in Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kia Motors and Toyota Kirloskar Motor's despatches. Meanwhile, van sales also rose by 6.8% on year to 11,908 units.
Passenger vehicle inventory reached historically high levels in September, with stock days stretching to 80–85 days against the ideal inventory of 30-35 days. Even with the onset of the festival season, retail sales of the segment remained under strain as customers delayed purchases due to the Shraddh period.
In September, the automobile industry reported strong growth in exports. Passenger vehicle exports rose slightly over 12% on year to 67,379 units last month and two-wheeler exports rose slightly over 23% to 372,481 units. However, exports of three-wheelers were down by 10.6% on year at 25,971 units.
On the vehicle production front, the industry reported a growth of 10.1% on year in total output to 2.77 million units. The production of two-wheelers grew by 12.9% on year to 2.30 million units, and those of three-wheelers was up nearly 4% at 108,245 units. By comparison, production of passenger vehicles declined 3.4% on year to 363,078 units in September.
JUL-SEPT QUARTER
During the quarter, total vehicle sales in India rose nearly 9% on year to 6.66 million vehicles and exports rose 13.3% on year to 1.34 million units. Production rose 9% on year to 8.07 million units. The strong growth in two-wheeler and three-wheeler despatches boosted the total vehicle sales in India in Jul-Sept. Sales of two-wheelers rose 12.6% on year to 5.18 million units in Apr-Jun, with growth recorded across all sub-segments. Motorcycle sales, which account for around 62% of the segment's sales, rose by slightly over 10% on year to 3.21 million units, while scooter sales expanded by nearly 17% on year to 1.83 million units, and moped sales went up by 16.5% on year to 137,078 units.
In Jul-Sept, despatches of three-wheelers to dealerships rose by 6.6% on year to 208,718 units, driven by passenger carrier sales, which rose by 10.3% on year to 172,855 units, and electric cart sales, which rose by 64.4% on year to 980 units. By comparison, goods carrier despatches fell by 1.4% on year to 27,656 units and those of electric rickshaws shrunk by nearly 31% on year to 7,227 units.
In the commercial vehicle category, domestic despatches fell by 11% on year to 220,643 units in Jul-Sep, on account of a decline in medium and heavy, and light commercial vehicle sales, which fell by slightly over 12% and 10% on year, respectively. In the medium and heavy segment, sales of goods carriers fell by nearly 16% on year to 69,514 units, but those of passenger carriers rose by nearly 14% on year to 12,895 units. In the light commercial vehicle category, sales of passenger carriers and goods carriers fell by around 10%, respectively, to 11,864 units and 126,370 units.
During the September quarter, domestic sales of passenger vehicles fell by nearly 2% on year to 1.06 million units, on account of a decline in small car sales. The industry sold 318,805 small cars, registering a decline of nearly 20% on-year. Sales of small and hatchback models have been weak for some time with the shift in consumer preference to sport utility vehicles, which now account for over 65% of passenger vehicle sales. In Jul-Sept, sales of utility vehicles rose by 9% on year to 697,569 units.
"The overall Indian automobile industry remained strong in Q2 2024-25 with 8.9% growth compared to Q2 2023-24. Heavy rainfall in key states and almost the entire ‘Shradh’ period falling in the month of September, did impact the sales numbers of some of the segments. With the rains easing and continued infrastructure spending, and the arrival of the festive season boosting consumption, we anticipate healthy demand in the next quarter," said Shailesh Chandra, president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
For Apr-Sept, the association of vehicle manufacturers reported total vehicle sales of 13.07 million units in India, up 12.5% on year, exports rose by 14.3% on year to 2.53 million units and production was up by 12.3% on year to 15.62 million units.
