MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Monday said that the Northeast Monsoon is likely to begin over southeastern peninsular India around Tuesday and Wednesday. The weather bureau also said the Southwest Monsoon is likely to withdraw from the remaining parts of the country in two days.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from the entire Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and most parts of the northern Bay of Bengal. Currently, conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Maharashtra over the next two days. The Southwest Monsoon started to withdraw from parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat on Sept. 23, against the normal date of Sept. 17.

Under the influence of a low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and south interior Karnataka till Thursday. Similar weather conditions are also seen over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema till Wednesday, it said.

The weather system is likely to move west-northwestwards and become a well-marked low pressure area over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal by Tuesday, it said.

In view of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, an orange alert has been issued in coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu for Monday. An orange alert has been issued for south interior Karnataka along with the above places for Tuesday. An orange alert indicates a rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Moving to the western parts of the country, the Meteorological Department predicts heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa till Tuesday and Gujarat today. Central Maharashtra is likely to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the weather agency said northeast, northwest, and east India are unlikely to see significant rainfall during the week.

In view of extremely heavy rains, the weather bureau has asked farmers to drain excess water from rice nurseries and maize, rice, pepper, and turmeric fields. It has also advised them to keep the harvested produce in safer places.  End
