IMD issues orange alert in Kerala, Tamil Nadu Fri due to heavy rainfall

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry for Friday due to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert indicates a rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm in 24 hours. The weather bureau has also predicted very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday and Tuesday and over parts of Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.
Parts of Kerala are likely to get heavy rainfall during the week, while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy rainfall from Friday to Wednesday, it said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over Lakshwadeep and parts of Karnataka on Tuesday and over coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday, the weather bureau said.
The Met Department also said that the low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra coast is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the central Arabian Sea by Saturday morning.
Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35 kilometres per hour to 45 kilometres per hour and gusting to 55 kilometres per hour is likely over parts of Lakshwadeep, the southeast Arabian Sea and many parts of the southwest Arabian Sea, along and off Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, the south Gujarat coast, most parts of east central Arabian Sea, and central parts of south Bay of Bengal, the weather bureau said. It has advised fishermen not to venture into these areas during the period.
In northeast India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Assam and Meghalaya on Friday and over Arunachal Pradesh till Saturday. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday, the weather agency said. In western India, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the Konkan and Goa on Friday and over parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat till Saturday.
The weather bureau said conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, some parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and some parts of Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim during the next two days. End
