--Water level in key reservoirs 157.267 bcm, 87% of total capacity
--Current water level in reservoirs up 18% YOY, 13% up from 10-yr avg
MUMBAI – The water level in the 43 key reservoirs in the southern region of India rose to 47.109 billion cubic metre as of Thursday from 46.843 billion cubic metre last week, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current water level is 86% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs compared with 50% in the corresponding period last year.
Six of the 43 reservoirs in the region are at full capacity and 17 are almost full at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. This was mainly due to above normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon--Jun. 1 to Sept. 30. Only one reservoir in the region recorded 40% and below of the total reservoir level.
Meanwhile, the water level in 155 key reservoirs of the country as of Thursday fell to 157.267 billion cubic metres from 158.529 billion cubic metres last week. The current water level is 87% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres, the data showed. Water level in the 155 reservoirs was up 18% from a year ago and 13% above the average for the last ten years.
Of the 155 key reservoirs, 47 were at full capacity and 42 are at 91-99% of the full reservoir level while six are below 40% of the total storage levels, the data showed. More than half of the 50 reservoirs in the western region recorded 100% live storage capacity. Also, this is the only region which had no reservoir with 40% or below storage capacity.
The western region includes Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra, which recorded excess to large excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon. However, the monsoon is yet to withdraw from parts of Gujarat and the whole of Maharashtra and Goa, which is a positive indication for reservoirs in these states. The water level in the reservoirs in the western region was 36.107 billion cubic metres, 97% of the total live storage capacity against 89% a year ago.
In the central region, water level in the reservoirs fell on week from 44.103 billion cubic metres to 43.653 billion cubic metres, 91% of the total live storage capacity against 84% in the corresponding period last year. In the eastern region, the water level in the reservoirs fell to 17.656 billion cubic metres from 17.858 billion cubic metres last week. However, the current water level is higher at 85% of the total live storage capacity from 79% in the corresponding period last year.
While water level in key reservoirs in most regions increased on year, the water level in northern India, which includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, fell. Although, Rajasthan received excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh recorded below normal rains. In the northern region, the water level in the reservoirs fell to 12.742 billion cubic metres from 13.527 billion cubic metres last week. The current water level fell to 64% of the total live storage capacity from 83% a year ago, data showed.
Out of the 155 reservoirs, 147 reported more than 80% of normal storage while eight reported storage levels at 80% of normal or below that, the data showed. Of the eight reservoirs, one had storage up to only 50% of the normal level.
Since Oct. 1, India has received 26 mm of rainfall, 24% below the normal of 34.3 mm for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
