India Apr-Sept major ports' freight traffic up 5.03% on year

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India in Apr-Sept rose 5.03% on year to 413.75 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. The rise was mainly led by an uptrend in crude and petroleum products cargo, which rose 2.84% on year to 122.62 million tonnes. Such cargo accounts for nearly a third of total cargo handled at all major ports across the country.
Container traffic saw a 4.60% increase in tonnage terms at 94.63 million tonnes, and thermal coal cargo volume for Apr-Sept rose 4.49% on year to 64.83 million tonnes. Traffic in the miscellaneous category was up 26.29% on year at 51.84 million tonnes in Apr-Sept.
The increase in cargo handled in Apr-Sept was limited due to lower coking coal volumes, which fell 0.97% on year to 29.59 million tonnes. Iron ore volumes were down 2.58% on year at 25.46 million tonnes and finished fertilisers cargo was down 26.56% at 3.25 million tonnes. Raw fertilisers cargo handled was higher by 5.75% on year at 4.69 million tonnes.
Among specific ports, Paradip handled the highest traffic in Apr-Sept at 73.16 million tonnes, followed by Deendayal port of Kandla at 71.39 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 44.80 million tonnes.
