MF industry sees net outflows Sept driven by debt funds, AMFI data shows

MUMBAI – The mutual fund industry saw net outflows of INR 711.14 billion in September, after seeing net inflows for the last two months. The net outflows were mainly due to huge net outflows from the open-ended debt mutual funds, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India showed. The assets under management of the mutual fund industry were up merely 0.6% on month at 67.09 trln rupees.
Open-ended debt funds saw net outflows of INR 1.14 trillion in the reporting month. Within which, liquid funds saw the highest net outflows of INR 726.7 billion, followed by money market fund which saw net outflows of INR 234.21 billion. The assets under management of open-ended debt funds fell by 6.4% on month to INR 14.97 trillion.
The net inflows of open-ended equity funds fell to a four-month low of INR 344.19 billion in September. The assets under management of equity funds were up 3.4% on month at INR 31.10 trillion as on Sept.30.
Within open-ended equity funds, net inflows into sectoral, thematic funds were at INR 132.55 billion. During the reporting month, fund houses came out with 4 new fund offers in this category and garnered 78.42 bln rupees. Other funds within this category such as small cap funds, mid-cap funds, large cap funds and large and mid-cap funds continued to see net inflows, the data showed.
Focussed funds and Equity linked Savings Schemes were the two which saw net outflows of INR 2.72 billion and INR 3.48 billion, respectively, in the reporting month.
The net inflows into hybrid funds also went down to INR 49.01 billion in September. The category saw net outflows of INR 1.26 billion in conservative hybrid funds and net outflows of INR 35.32 billion in arbitrage funds. The assets under management of hybrid funds were up 1.6% on month to INR 8.75 trillion.
Under other funds, the net inflows of index funds fell to a five-month low of INR 19.60 billion from INR 65.24 billion reported in April. The net inflows of gold exchange traded funds, which touched an all-time high in August, fell to INR 12.33 billion in the reporting month.
For the month of September, 27 new fund offers were launched with index funds having the maximum number of new schemes. The new fund offers accumulated INR 145.75 billion at the end of the month. Of which, the index fund garnered INR 36.56 billion through 13 new fund offers.
The systematic investment plan witnessed 6.64 million new registrations in the reporting month. The net inflows in systematic investment plans were at an all-time high at INR 245.09 billion from INR 235.47 billion a month ago. The assets under management of systematic investment plans were up to INR 13.82 trillion compared to INR 13.39 trillion in Aug.31. End
