NEW DELHI – Days before the portal for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme opens for applicants, the number of internship opportunities available on the portal has risen to nearly 50,000 as of Wednesday, according to a source in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The number of internship postings on the portal was around 16,000 till Monday, the source said.
Last week, the government rolled out the pilot portal to facilitate a one-year internship scheme for the youth, announced in the Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). Informist had reported that the pilot portal would be live for companies to post their openings till Oct. 10, and candidates could apply after registering with minimum data on the portal from Oct. 12.
Over 130 companies have posted internship opportunities, including Jubilant Foodworks Ltd., Eicher Motor Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Tech Mahindra Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Bajaj Finance Ltd., and Muthoot Finance Ltd., the source said.
The internship opportunities are spread across 22 sectors and 20 fields. "The greatest share are available in the oil, gas and energy sector, followed closely by travel and hospitality," the source said. Other sectors in which opportunities are available include automotives, banking and financial services, infrastructure and construction, the source said.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in the Budget speech in July that the scheme would provide internships to 10 million youths over five years. The internships will be provided in the country's top 500 companies. Those selected for internships will get an allowance of INR 5,000 per month and a one-time assistance of INR 6,000. The companies will be expected to bear the cost of training and 10% of the internship cost from their corporate social responsibility funds, the minister had said.
Last week, Informist reported that the first lot of those interns is likely to hit the workforce on Dec. 2, and the government aims to have 100,000 internship offers by that time. End
