NEW DELHI – At a time when banks are focusing on widening financial inclusion and have increased the use of technology in their operations, a government survey has found that fewer than 40% of Indians aged 15 years and above can perform online banking transactions.

Only 37.8% of all people older than 15 years of age can undertake an online banking transaction, with the figure much lower for women at 25.2% against 47.1% for men, according to the results of the Comprehensive Annual Modular Survey for 2022-23 (Jul-Jun), released by the statistics ministry on Wednesday.

Surprisingly, just 37.5% of the youth, people aged between 15 and 24 years, can make banking transactions online, the survey found. Only 27.0% of females in this age group can make online banking transactions, while 46.1% of young men could do the same.

Over 96% of people aged 18 years and above had an individual or joint account in any bank or other financial institution, including mobile money service providers. In urban areas, 96.4% of people had an account with a lender. This figure was lower at 94.6% for rural areas, according to the survey.

The survey also found that only 9.9% of households possessed a computer. In rural areas, only 4.2% of households had a computer, while in urban areas this figure was 21.6%.  End
