--Govt OKs INR-44-bln road project invest in Punjab, Rajasthan border areas

NEW DELHI – The government on Wednesday approved the construction of 2,280 km of roads in the border areas of Punjab and Rajasthan. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The government will invest INR 44.06 billion for the construction of road network at the India-Pakistan border in Punjab and Rajasthan. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move would enhance rural livelihood and ensure connectivity with the rest of the highway network.

Vaishnaw said the prime minister had emphasised development of infrastructure in border areas. The government has prioritised road and telecom connectivity in border areas, along with water supply, health and education facilities.

In September, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said that the Border Roads Organisation had constructed over 8,500 km of roads and more than 400 permanent bridges in border areas in the last 10 years. "In the last four years alone, more than 7,000 border villages have been connected with internet connection," Singh had said.  End
