NEW DELHI – Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Farooq Abdullah Tuesday announced his son Omar Abdullah, the party's vice-president, would be the chief minister of the Union territory. The announcement came after Omar Abdullah secured victory in the Budgam assembly constituency and trends showed the National Conference's alliance with the Congress well past the half-way mark in the 90-member legislative assembly.

Omar Abdullah, who contested two seats, won Budgam with a margin of 18,485 votes and was leading in the family's traditional constituency Ganderbal with a margin of 10,203 votes. Omar Abdullah had served as the eighth chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2015. He also served as minister of state for external affairs in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government for a brief period in 2001-02.

According to data from the Election Commission of India, the National Conference had secured victory in 13 seats and was leading in 28 others while the Congress had won two and was leading in four more. The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which is part of the alliance, was leading in the sole seat it contested.

Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the erstwhile state into two Union territories in August 2019. The previous assembly elections were held in 2014. The outcome was a hung assembly with the People's Democratic Party emerging as the single largest party with 28 seats, followed by the BJP with 25, National Conference with 15, and Congress with 12.  End
