MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Tuesday said heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala, Mahe, and Tamil Nadu this week, and over northeast India during the first half of the week.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Lakshwadeep on Tuesday, with heavy rainfall likely on Wednesday. Rayalaseema and coastal Karnataka are likely to record heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, while southern interior Karnataka is expected to see heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Friday, the weather bureau said.
In northeast India, Tripura is likely to receive heavy rainfall Tuesday, the weather agency said. Some parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday, while parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya might see similar weather conditions till Friday, the department said.
Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35 kilometres per hour to 45 kilometres per hour and gusting to 55 kilometres per hour is likely to prevail over the Maldives, Lakshadweep Comorin areas, parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, Kerala, Karnataka coasts, and the Gulf of Mannar from Tuesday to Friday, the agency said. Such squally weather will also prevail over central Arabian Sea and the adjoining south Arabian Sea from Saturday to Monday. The weather bureau has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in these areas during the period.
The bureau expects a low-pressure area over Lakshadweep and the adjoining southeast and eastcentral Arabian Sea on Wednesday. The low-pressure area is likely to move northwestward and intensify further into a depression over the central Arabian Sea in the next three days.
The weather bureau said conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Maharashtra in the next two to three days. The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Nautanwa, Sultanpur, Panna, Narmada Puram, Khargone, Nandurbar, and Navsari, according to the weather department.
Northwest, west and central India are unlikely to get any significant rainfall next week, the weather bureau said. End
