NEW DELHI - The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and the Congress party alliance has crossed the majority mark of 46 in the 90-member Assembly of the Union territory, according to the latest numbers released by the Election Commission of India. The vote count trends by the poll panel indicated that the NC-Congress alliance was leading on 53 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party on 26. The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party was ahead on three seats, while the Jammu and Kashmir People Conference was leading on two seats. Independents were ahead on six seats.
In Haryana, the initial trends by the poll panel showed the BJP headed for a historic third term. According to the poll panel, the saffron party was leading on 49 out of the 90 seats. The Congress was leading on 35, the Indian National Lok Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party ahead one seat each, while the independents were ahead on four seats. These are the initial trends and several rounds of counting remain.
The BJP, which has been in power in Haryana since 2014, had won 40 seats in the 2019 elections. Led by Dushyant Chautala, the Jannayak Janata Party, which played the kingmaker in 2019 with 10 seats, was unlikely to even open its account this time.
Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir are being held for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 in the state in August 2019. Employment and abrogation of Article 370 formed the key issues in poll campaign in the hilly state. In the Kashmir valley, political parties have promised restoration of statehood and special status in their manifestos. The last assembly elections were held in erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State in 2014, which threw up a hung Assembly with the PDP emerging as the largest party. The PDP had then won 28 seats followed by the BJP with 25 seats, NC 15 and Congress 12. End
