Commodity derivatives exchanges' Aug turnover up 0.5% on month, says SEBI

MUMBAI – The turnover of commodity derivatives exchanges rose 0.5% on month in August to INR 46.0 trillion, according to the September issue of the monthly bulletin of market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India. The turnover had recorded a hefty rise of 23% a month ago.
The turnover of the agri segment fell 6.6% in August to INR 128.5 billion, while that of the non-agri segment rose 0.5% to INR 45.9 trillion. Agri commodities accounted for 0.3% of the overall turnover during the month, while non-agri commodities had a share of 99.7%. The share of futures and options contracts in the total turnover stood at 12.7% and 87.3%, respectively.
Of the four commodity exchanges, two recorded a rise in their turnover in August over July, while the other two registered a decline. Multi Commodity Exchange of India, the biggest exchange by turnover, saw a rise of 0.7% at INR 45.2 trillion, while the BSE reported a rise of 391.2% at INR 160 million. On the other hand, the National Commodity and Derivaties Exchange reported a 3.2% fall in its turnover at INR 132.4 billion in August on a monthly basis, and the National Stock Exchange reported a fall of 12.6% at INR 697.3 billion.
MCX had the highest share of 98.2% in turnover, followed by NSE at 1.5% and NCDEX at 0.3%, while BSE had a negligible share, the SEBI data showed. End
