NEW DELHI – For Jammu & Kashmir, it may be a repeat of 2014, with most exit polls on Saturday predicting a hung Assembly in the Union territory. However, the alliance of the National Conference and the Congress party is seen getting a clear edge with over 40 seats in the 90-member Assembly. Exit polls predicted 35-40 seats for the NC-Congress coalition in Jammu & Kashmir.
India Today–C Voter predicted 11-15 seats for the NC-Congress in Jammu division out of the 43 seats, a gain of five seats, and 29-33 seats in the Kashmir division out of 47 seats. The exit polls predicted 20-34 seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party. India Today–C Voter predicted the BJP winning 27-31 seats in the Jammu division and 0-1 seats in Kashmir.
The pollsters predicted 4-12 seats for the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples' Democratic Party and 4-23 for other parties and independents.
According to some pollsters, the saffron party may add more seats to its tally from 2014, when it won 25 seats, and emerge as the largest party in Jammu & Kashmir. In 2014, the PDP was the largest party with 28 seats.
The PDP, led by former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, may play the role of kingmaker in government formation. PDP leader Iltija Mufti and Waheed ur Rehman Para had earlier told Informist Media that the party would support the INDIA bloc and a non-BJP government in the Union territory. The entry of several independents, including the alliance of Jamaat-e-Islami members and Sheikh Abdul Rashid’s Awami Ittehad Party, haven't dented the NC-Congress' prospects in the Valley much, according to the exit polls.
Elections for the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly were held in three phases – Sep. 18, Sep. 25 and Tuesday. The Union territory recorded a voter turnout of 63.88%, lower than the Assembly elections held in 2014, when 65.52% votes were cast. The results will be declared on Tuesday. Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir are being held for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 in the state in August 2019.
Employment and abrogation of Article 370 were among the major issues in the Jammu & Kashmir elections. In the Kashmir valley, political parties have promised the restoration of statehood and special status in their manifestos.
