NEW DELHI – A total of 61.19% voter turnout was recorded for the Haryana Assembly elections held Saturday, according to the provisional data released by the Election Commission of India. Voting for the single-phase elections to the 90-member House commenced at 0700 IST and concluded at 1800 IST, with some minor incidents of violence reported at some places. The poll panel, however, said the voting procedure remained unaffected.
Mewat district, which witnessed some incidents of clashes, recorded the highest voter turnout of 68.28%, while Gurugram district recorded the lowest turnout of 50.00%, as per the latest data. Apart from Mewat, 16 other districts recorded a voter turnout of over 60%. Panchkula, Sonipat, Faridabad and Charkhi Dadri saw less than 60% polling.
As per the provisional data, the voter turnout saw a significant drop from the previous Assembly elections held in 2019, when nearly 68% votes were cast. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a voter turnout of 64.8% was recorded in Haryana. The results will be declared Tuesday, along with those for Jammu & Kashmir Assembly, which were held in three phases.
Altogether, 1,031 candidates were in the fray in Haryana. These included scions of political families, particularly those of former chief ministers Devi Lal, Bansi Lal, and Bhajan Lal. The state has around 20 million eligible voters. Voting was held across 20,632 booths.
The enforcement agencies have made seizures worth INR 757 million in Haryana, since the announcement of elections. The corresponding figure for 2019 elections was INR 190 million, the poll panel said. Seizures have been made across all districts and cohorts, which includes INR 315 million cash, INR 166 million worth of liquor and INR 111 million worth drugs, the Election Commission said.
The high-voltage campaign for the election ended Thursday, and saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spearheading the campaigns for their respective parties. Key constituencies in the state include Ladwa, Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, Ateli, Julana, and Hisar. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was in the fray in Ladwa, pitted against Congress' Mewa Singh, Aam Aadmi Party's Joga Singh, the Indian National Lok Dal's Sher Singh Barshami, and Vinod Sharma of the Jannayak Janata Party. Mewa Singh represents Ladwa in the outgoing assembly.
In Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was the Congress candidate. Julana, where wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat is making her political debut as a Congress candidate, was among the most closely watched constituencies. End
