NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Thursday approved two schemes for the farm sector with an outlay of INR 1.01 trillion. The PM Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana scheme will promote sustainable farming and the Krishonnati Yojana will address food security and agricultural self-sufficiency.

Of the INR 1.01 trillion, PM Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana is allocated INR 570.7 billion, while Krishonnati Yojana is allocated INR 442.5 billion. For the funding of schemes, the share of the centre and states are INR 690.8 billion and INR 322.3 billion, respectively, the government said in a release. Under the PM Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, states will be given the flexibility to reallocate funds from one component to another based on their specific requirements, the release added. Earlier in the day, Informist had exclusively reported that the Cabinet was likely to approve two farm schemes worth INR 1 trillion.

Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana aims to promote sustainable farming, taking into account the regional factors and requirements. Per drop more crop programme will have different implementation in Rajasthan and Odisha due to geographical variations, Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said briefing media after the Cabinet meeting.

The scheme will also focus on soil health management, agricultural mechanisation, crop diversification, and accelerating funding for agri startups, among others. The 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the Union Budget had set aside INR 75.5 billion for the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. The scheme, launched in 2007, focusses on developing agriculture and allied sectors by boosting pre- and post-harvest infrastructures.

To achieve self-sufficiency in edible oils and ensure food security, the government, under the Krishonnati Yojana scheme has set aside INR 101 billion for National Mission for Edible Oil-Oil Seeds. By 2031, the government aims to increase edible oil production to 20.2 million tonne from 12.7 million tonne by increasing oilseed acreage and productivity. The programme aims to increase oilseed production to 69 million tonne from 39 million tonne by increasing oilseed acreage to 33 million ha from 29 million ha, and yield to 2,112 kg per ha from 1,353 kg per ha, Vaishnaw said.

To improve the yield of oilseeds, the programme will support research and ensure timely access to affordable quality seeds. Farmers will also be encouraged to cultivate oilseeds by ensuring the minimum support price for oilseeds. Additionally, farmer producer organisations and cooperatives will facilitate market linkage for farmers, Vaishnaw said.

To increase edible oil production, oil extraction and recovery efficiency will be enhanced, he added. In her Budget speech on Jul. 23, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that oilseeds such as mustard, groundnut, sesame, soybean, and sunflower will be promoted for achieving self-sufficiency.

The Krishonnati Yojana scheme has programmes for developing horticulture output, value chain, and agriculture marketing, among others. The scheme also aims to digitise agriculture and integrate agricultural census, economics, and statistics. End
