MUMBAI – Coal production in India in the first six months of financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) rose 5.9% on year to 453.01 million tonne from 427.97 million tonne in the same period a year ago, the Ministry of Coal said Tuesday in a release citing provisional data. Coal production was up 2.5% on year at 68.94 million tonne in September against 67.26 million tonne in the corresponding period year ago, it said.

As of Sunday, the coal stock at domestic coal-based thermal power plants was at 33.46 million tonne, a growth of 51.1% from the corresponding period last year, according to the release. "The upturn in offtake has resulted in a comfortable coal stock position," the ministry said.

The country's coal dispatches in September rose 4.4% on year to 73.37 million tonne from 70.31 million tonne a year ago. During Apr-Sep, coal dispatched rose 5.5% on year to 487.87 million tonnes.

The upward trajectory in both production and dispatch bolsters energy security and to achieve self-sufficiency in coal supply, the ministry said.  End
