NEW DELHI – A voter turnout of 65.58% was recorded in the third and final phase of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, the provisional data released by the Election Commission of India showed. The final data on the voter turnout for the third phase and cumulative data for all the phases put together would be updated later, the commission said.
In the third phase on Tuesday, votes were cast for 40 of the 90 assembly seats. Among the seven districts--Bandipora, Baramulla, Jammu, Kathua, Kupwara, Samba and Udhampur--that went to polls in this phase, Udhampur district recorded the highest voter turnout of 73% as of 1900 IST, while Baramulla district in Kashmir division recorded lowest turnout of 55.73%.
Voting commenced at 0700 IST and concluded at 1800 IST. The commission said voting across 5,060 polling stations in the final phase was largely peaceful. A total of 415 candidates were in the fray in this phase, with about 3.9 million eligible voters.
As the polling concluded in Jammu and Kashmir, the election commission said that the overall voting surpassed the 2024 Lok Sabha elections record. The commission said that the elections witnessed a significant increase in voter turnout in areas which have been infamous for militancy and boycotting democratic processes. "Polling percentage has increased by 12.97% in Pulwama seat in these elections compared to the corresponding elections held in 2014. Zainapora seat in Shopian saw a 9.52% increase while Eidgah seat in Srinagar registered a 9.16% increase, reflecting growing confidence in the electoral process," commission said.
The enforcement agencies have made seizures worth INR 1.3 billion, surpassing INR 1.0 billion during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. A bulk of seizures included drugs worth INR 1.1 billion, the poll panel said.
The first phase of elections, held on Sept. 18, recorded a voter turnout of over 61%. The second phase, on Wednesday last week, recorded a turnout of 57.31%. The results will be declared on Oct. 8.
Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir are being held for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 in the state in August 2019. End
