MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s total sales in September rose nearly 2% from a year ago as higher despatches of utility vehicles and vans, sales to other companies and exports helped offset the weakness in the compact and mid-size car segments. India's largest passenger carmaker despatched 184,727 vehicles in September, up from 181,343 units a year ago and 181,782 in August, Maruti Suzuki said in an exchange filing.
The company's utility vehicle sales, including Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Fronx, and Jimny, rose nearly 4% on year to 61,549 units. However, domestic passenger car sales declined about 11% on year to 71,505 units.
Within the passenger car segment, Maruti Suzuki sold 10,363 mini cars during September, compared to 10,351 units sold a year ago. Sales of compact cars declined by 12% on year to 60,480 units, while mid-size vehicle sales plummeted 55% on year to 662 units. Maruti Suzuki's compact and mid-size segment includes models such as WagonR, Baleno, Swift, Alto, S-Presso and Ciaz.
The company's total domestic sales, including passenger and light commercial vehicles and sales to other original equipment makers, fell 1.2% on year to 156,999 units. Domestic passenger vehicle sales were down 4% on year to 144,962 units, while sales to other original equipment makers jumped 56% on year to 8,938 units.
For the last three months, Maruti Suzuki has been recalibrating despatches to dealers. "The recalibration of wholesale sales was done, keeping in mind the retail demand. In September, the company saw healthy uptick in bookings and is bullish about retail sales during Navratri and Diwali," the automaker's head of marketing and sales Partho Banerjee said.
In September, the company's light commercial vehicle sales surged 35% on year to 3,099 units. The company's total exports during the month grew 23% on year to 27,728 units, aiding the overall sales growth. On Tuesday, shares of Maruti Suzuki closed 0.5% lower at INR 13,166 on the National Stock Exchange. End
