NEW DELHI – India is ready to share its experience with Jamaica in areas like digital public infrastructure, innovation, biofuel, education, small industries, health and agriculture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday after holding bilateral talks with his Jamaican counterpart Andrew Holness. The two countries signed memorandum of understandings in the field of digital public infrastructure, culture, and sports.
Jamaica seeks stronger ties with India in the field of science and technology, security, digital infrastructure and energy, Holness said. Modi expressed confidence that the outcome of the discussions with Holness, who is the first prime minister of Jamaica to visit India, will accelerate relations between the two countries even faster than Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Holness is on a four-day visit to India, from Monday to Thursday.
"Organized crime, drug trafficking, terrorism are our common challenges. We agree to face these challenges together. We will also be happy to share our successful experience in the space sector with Jamaica," Modi said. The Indian government has decided to name the road in front of the Jamaica High Commission in Delhi as 'Jamaica Marg'. Both the leaders also discussed global and regional issues and said that all tensions and disputes should be resolved through dialogue.
"We will continue our efforts together to ensure global peace and stability. India and Jamaica have a common opinion that reforms are necessary in all global institutions including the United Nations Security Council. We will continue to work together to give them a contemporary look," Modi said.
Holness extended support to India's candidature for UN Security Council for the period 2028-2029. "We share views on the reforms of the UN, in particular the Security Council, to ensure that its composition is reflective of current balance of power and the emergence of new leaders like India," Holness said. He also expressed confidence that India will continue to be a voice of the global south as it seeks to fulfil its mission of more equitable, prosperous and peaceful world.
Bilateral trade between the two countries has grown significantly over the past decade, increasing from $28.28 million in 2011-12 (Apr-Mar) to $116.73 million in 2023-24. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the trade in 2023-24 grew 26% compared to the previous year. Both the countries also share rich people to people ties with around 70,000 Indian diaspora acting as a bridge between India and Jamaica, the ministry said. End
