The automaker's total vehicle sales in India came in at 69,694 units, down 15% on year, and exports dropped 30% on year to 1,651 units.
In September, the company's commercial vehicle sales fell 23% on year to 30,032 units and passenger vehicle despatches fell 9% to 41,313 units. In the commercial vehicle segment, the company's domestic sales declined by 23% on year to 28,631 units, and its exports fell by 24% on year to 1,401 units.
Despatches of heavy trucks and small commercial vehicles slumped by 28% and 26% on year, respectively, during the month. Nearly 70% of Tata Motors' commercial vehicle sales come from these two segments. In comparison, sales of passenger carriers fell 7% on year, and despatches of intermediate, light and medium trucks declined by 16%.
In the passenger vehicle segment, the automaker recorded sales of 41,063 units in India in September, down 8% from the year-ago period. In comparison, its exports plummeted by 51% on year to 250 units. In the electric passenger vehicle segment, the company recorded sales of 4,680 units during the month, down 23% on year.
In the Jul-Sep period, Tata Motors sold a total of 215,034 vehicles, down from 243,024 units in the year-ago quarter. Its total commercial vehicle sales fell 19% on year to 84,281 units, while total passenger vehicle sales fell 6% to 130,753.
In Jul-Sep, the company's commercial vehicle sales were impacted due to slowdown in execution of infrastructure projects, reduced mining activity and an overall drop in fleet utilisation due to heavy rains. However, with the easing monsoon, increased infrastructure spending, and the arrival of the festive season, the company expects demand to pick up gradually in Oct-Dec, said Girish Wagh, executive director of Tata Motors.
On the decline in passenger vehicle sales during Jul-Sep, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd.'s Managing Director Shailesh Chandra said, "We readjusted wholesales to lower-than-expected retails, to keep channel inventory under control... Registrations picked up pace towards the end of the month (September), which augurs well for the festive period ahead."
On Tuesday, shares of Tata Motors ended at INR 965.20 on the National Stock Exchange, down 1% from the previous close. End
