MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy rainfall over parts of northeastern states during the next five days, it said in a release Tuesday. A few parts of this region are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather bureau said.

During the Southwest Monsoon, east and northeast India is the only homogenous region with deficient rainfall. The region recorded rainfall of 1,178.7 mm, 14% below the normal of 1,367.3 mm, according to the IMD. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar fall under this region.

During the past 24 hours, very heavy rainfall was recorded over parts of Assam and Meghalaya, the IMD said. Moving to the weather systems, the Met department said a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam and neighbourhoods at middle tropospheric levels.

The weather bureau also predicts heavy rainfall over South Peninsular India during the next three days. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, south interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and Mahe are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on Tuesday, IMD said.

In view of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of northeast and south India, the weather bureau has advised farmers to drain excess water from standing crop fields and fruit orchards to avoid water stagnation. It has also advised farmers to keep the harvested produce at a safer place.

Meanwhile, the weather department said northwest, west, and central India are not likely to receive any significant rainfall during the next one week. During the Southwest Monsoon period, Jun. 1 to Sept. 30, the country received 8% above normal showers at 934.8 mm.

The IMD also said conditions are likely to become favourable for the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from more parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two to three days. Over the same time-period, it also sees the monsoon withdrawal from some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh.

Last week, the Southwest Monsoon had withdrawn from some parts of west Rajasthan and Kutch in Gujarat, the weather bureau said. The normal withdrawal date for the Southwest Monsoon is Sep 17.  End
