Polling begins for 40 seats in final phase of J&K Assembly elections

NEW DELHI – Polling in the third and final phase of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections started at 0700 IST on Tuesday in 40 constituencies across seven districts. A total of 415 candidates are in the fray in this phase, with about 3.9 million eligible voters, according to data from the Election Commission. The day-long polling is scheduled to end at 1800 IST.
Out of 40 seats, 24 seats are in four districts of Jammu division – Samba, Udhampur, Kathua and Jammu – and 16 seats fall in three districts of Kashmir division – Bandipora, Baramulla and Kupwara. The Election Commission of India has set up 5060 polling stations for smooth and hassle-free voting.
Polling in the final phase will decide the fates of several heavyweights, including former deputy chief ministers Tara Chand of Congress and Muzaffar Beig. Tara Chand is contesting from Chhamb Constituency. Beig is contesting as an independent candidate from the Baramulla seat. Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone is contesting from Handwara. Congress working president Raman Bhalla is contesting from R S Pura Jammu south constituency.
With the final phase of polling, voting for all 90 seats in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will be completed. The results will be declared on Oct. 8. The first phase of elections, held on Sep 18, recorded a voter turnout of over 61%. The second phase of polls held on Wednesday recorded a voter turnout of 57.31%.
These are the first Assembly elections in the Union territory after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The last Assembly elections were held in 2014. End
