Parliament standing committees set up; Mahtab to head finance panel

NEW DELHI – Almost four months after the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha and the new government, the department-related parliamentary standing committees, which scrutinise the functioning of ministries, were announced on Thursday, with Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bhartruhari Mahtab heading the committee on finance.
The Rajya Sabha secretariat announced the formation of 24 department-related parliamentary standing committees, each comprising 31 members — 21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The crucial committee on external affairs will be headed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, while the committees on home and defence will be headed by the BJP's Radha Mohan Das Agarwal and Radha Mohan Singh, respectively. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is a member of the defence panel.
Apart from external affairs, the Congress members will head the committees on education, agriculture, and rural development. Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh will head the committee on education, former Punjab chief minister and Lok Sabha member Charanjit Singh Channi will head the panel on agriculture, and Saptagiri Ulaka from Odisha will head the panel on rural development and Panchayati Raj.
The committee on commerce will be headed by the Trinamool Congress' Rajya Sabha Member Dola Sen, and the committee on industry will be headed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's Tiruchi Shiva. The DMK's Kanimozhi Karunanidhi will chair the panel on consumer affairs, food and public distribution.
The Samajwadi Party's Ram Gopal Yadav will head the committee on health and family welfare.
The Janata Dal United's Sanjay Jha will head the committee on transport, tourism and culture, while the panel on communications and information technology will be headed by the BJP's Nishikant Dubey.
The Telugu Desam Party's Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy will chair the committee on housing and urban affairs, and the BJP's Rajiv Pratap Rudy will head the committee on water resources. Nationalist Congress Party member Sunil Tatkare will head the committee on petroleum and natural gas, and the Shiv Sena's Shrirang Appa Barne has been named as head of the committee on energy.
BJP leader and former minister Anurag Thakur will head the panel on coal, mines, and steel.
Department-related standing committees keep a tab on the functioning of various ministries. They also scrutinise the budgetary allocation to the ministries and examine the Bills referred to them by the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha or the speaker of the Lok Sabha. The panels also scrutinise the annual reports of the ministries. End
