NEW DELHI – French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed that India should be made a permanent member of the UN Security Council along with Germany, Japan, Brazil and two countries from Africa. The French president said that it was time to expand the Security Council by adding new members.

"I hear a lot of people saying that what we need to do to the UN... just throw it in the bin... We can't resolve conflicts. Why do we have it? Let's make the UN more efficient. Firstly, making them more representative. That's why France is in favour of the Security Council being expanded. Germany, Japan, India and Brazil should be permanent members as well as two countries that Africa would designate to represent it," Macron said, addressing the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

Currently, there are five permanent members – US, UK, Russia, France and China – in the Security Council with veto powers. Besides, 10 non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.

India has been seeking a permanent seat in the Security Council for some time. India's claim is based on its status as one of the world's largest democracies and its growing global economic and geopolitical influence. Several countries, including the US, have supported India's claim for a permanent seat in the Security Council. However, China has been opposed to making India a permanent member of the Security Council.

At the recently held Quad Leaders' Summit in the US, India, the US, Australia and Japan reiterated the necessity to reform the UN Security Council. The leaders of the Quad nations said in a joint statement that there was a need to make the UN more representative, transparent, and accountable by expanding its permanent and non-permanent categories of membership.

"This expansion of permanent seats should include representation for Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean in a reformed Security Council," the Quad said in the joint statement.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had in April expressed confidence that India would secure a permanent seat in the Security Council. "We will surely get it. But no big achievement comes without hard work. So, we will have to work hard for it," Jaishankar had said.  End
