Extremely heavy rains likely in central Maharashtra, Konkan, says IMD

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Gujarat region for today due to isolated extremely heavy rainfall. Similar weather conditions are also very likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim for today because of which the department has issued a red alert.
A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 mm and an orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours, according to the weather department.
In view of the above weather conditions, IMD has asked farmers in central Maharashtra and Marathwada to postpone harvesting of matured soybean, groundnut, maize, and pearl millet. It has also asked farmers to drain excess water from rice, finger millet, turmeric, groundnut, vegetables, and orchards. The weather department also warned farmers to keep the harvested produce in safer places.
Meanwhile, for urban regions, the weather department has alerted people about localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses. The department has issued a moderate to high flash flood risk for the next 24 hours for regions which are likely to receive isolated extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall.
During the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall was observed over parts of Konkan, Goa, and Uttarakhand. Heavy to very heavy showers were recorded over parts of Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, central Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
Conditions were worse in Mumbai, with parts of the city receiving over 200 mm rainfall within six hours Wednesday evening. According to the regional meteorological centre, Mumbai, Santacruz received 170.3 mm rainfall and Colaba recorded 169.2 mm showers in the last 24 hours. According to the data from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster management department, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Mankhurd, and Govandi recorded over 200 mm of showers.
The municipal corporation has issued a red alert in the city and declared holidays for schools and colleges. According to various media reports, four people died due to extremely heavy rainfall. For the next 24 hours, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph in Mumbai city and suburbs, according to the regional Met centre.
The weather department also predicted very heavy rains over parts of Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh during the week. Heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of Telangana today, the IMD said. End
