Sitharaman moots cross-border real-time payment system with Uzbekistan

NEW DELHI – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday suggested setting up a cross-border real-time payments system with Uzbekistan. Talking to Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, she said that bilateral discussion on cooperation in fintech, and a cross-border real-time payments system would be of great convenience to students, tourists and businesses on both sides as tourism between India and Uzbekistan continues to increase. 

 

"Recognising the potential for further enhancing bilateral cooperation, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev appreciated India's proposals to collaborate in new areas such as digital technologies, renewable energy in addition to strengthening traditional areas of cooperation," the finance ministry said in a post on social-media platform X, formerly Twitter. 


Earlier in the day, Sitharaman met Uzbekistan Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev, and the two discussed increasing collaboration in areas such as digital technologies, fintech, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy, the finance ministry said. 

 

Sitharaman and Mirziyoyev, who met on the sidelines of the 9th annual meeting of the board of governors of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, agreed that the two nations could explore ways to cooperate on green technologies and climate action initiatives as well.  End
