--Govt: Coal imports critical given current consumption landscape
NEW DELHI – There is a critical need to import coal in the current consumption landscape, particularly for coking coal and high-grade thermal coal, which are not available in sufficient quantities within the domestic reserves, the coal ministry said in a release today. "This shortfall necessitates imports to support key industries, including steel," the ministry said.
India's coal imports rose a marginal 0.9% on year to 90.51 mln tn in Apr-Jul, the coal ministry said. In July, coal imports rose by 15.9% on year to 21.81 mln tn, the ministry said. Imports of non-coking coal increased by 2% on year in Apr-Jul, while coking coal imports declined by 2.6% in this period, the ministry said.
While coal-based power generation rose 10.2% on year during Apr-Jul, imports for blending purposes decreased by 8.2% on year during the same period. "This decline underscores India's steadfast commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in coal production and reducing reliance on imports," the ministry said.
Coal imports for the power sector increased because of substantial imports by power plants which are designed to use imported coal, the ministry said. Coal imports for the sector jumped 74.8% on year to 17.69 mln tn during Apr-Jul. Coal imports by the non-regulated sector fell 11% on year to 44.97 mln tn in the quarter, the ministry said.
"The proactive measures taken by the government to increase domestic coal output will ultimately reduce dependence on imports and contribute to the overall sustainability of India's energy landscape," the ministry said. "While the dynamics of coal imports present certain challenges, the Indian government's strategic focus on increasing coal production and curbing coal import reflects a positive outlook for the country's energy future."
