MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until Thursday due to likely extremely heavy rainfall. The weather department has also issued a red alert for Gujarat for Thursday.

The weather bureau also issued orange alerts for Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, east Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, and Gangetic West Bengal for today, for Assam till Thursday and for Bihar till Friday. It also issued orange alerts for Konkan and Goa and central Maharashtra for Friday.

A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 mm and an orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours, according to the weather department.

The weather department has forecast enhanced rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls over central, east and northeast India in the next three days.

In view of extremely heavy rains, the weather department has advised farmers in central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidharbha to postpone harvesting of matured soybean, groundnut, maize and pearl millet. It also asked farmers to move the harvested produce to safer places.

IMD sees a moderate risk of flash floods in south Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, central Maharashtra, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Thursday. Surface run-off may occur in fully saturated soils and low-lying areas over some of these areas due to heavy rainfall, the department said. End
