--Govt: Laptop import approvals issued till Sep 30 valid till Dec 31

NEW DELHI – The government has extended import authorisations for laptops and tablets by three months till Dec 31, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a circular. The government also clarified that importers will be allowed to apply for fresh import authorisations, which will be valid till the end of December, the circular said.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade introduced an import management system for the authorisation of imports of laptops, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers in November last year.

Importers will have to apply for fresh authorisations from Jan 1 subject to detailed guidance to be provided shortly, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said.

The government announced restrictions on imports of laptops and tablets in August last year. But after criticism, including from the US, it said it intends to only monitor the import of these items.  End
