Monsoon withdraws from more parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, says IMD

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon withdrew from some more parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat and some parts of Punjab and Haryana today, the India Meteorological Department said. The monsoon started its withdrawal process from the country on Monday, six days behind the normal date of Sep 17.

 

So far, Rajasthan and Gujarat have received above-normal showers, while Haryana and Punjab have got below-normal rainfall. The country has received 5?ove-normal rainfall at 886.9 mm during the season so far, according to the weather bureau.  

 

Meanwhile, a low pressure area has formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and off the north-Andhra and south-Odisha coasts under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, according to the IMD. 

 

The weather department said extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of coastal Karnataka and very heavy rainfall over parts of northern interior Karnataka, costal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam today. Very heavy precipitation will likely continue over parts of Karnataka till Wednesday, the IMD said.   

 

The IMD has issued a red alert in coastal Karnataka, and Konkan and Goa today. A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours.   

 

In association with the low pressure area, extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Konkan and Goa till Thursday, the Met department said. Under its influence, extremely heavy showers are very likely over parts of central Maharashtra and Gujarat region during the week, IMD said.

 

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Madhya Pradesh today and Wednesday, and Vidarbha on Wednesday, the IMD said. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim during the week, the weather bureau said.  End
