Modi backs peaceful resolution of war at meet with Ukraine's Zelenskyy

NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting on Monday with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the Summit of the Future at the UN General Assembly in New York. At the meeting, Modi reiterated India's clear approach in favour of a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine through diplomacy and dialogue.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting was organised following a request from the Ukrainian side. The two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, as well as the way forward regarding pursuing a path to peace.
"The two leaders recalled the prime minister's recent visit to Ukraine and expressed satisfaction at the continued consolidation of bilateral ties. The prime minister reiterated India's clear, consistent and constructive approach in favour of a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue, as well as engagement between all stakeholders," the ministry said.
Modi told Zelenskyy that the Russia-Ukraine war has been part of his discussions with leaders of various countries, and everyone wants a peaceful resolution through diplomacy and dialogue. He asserted that India remains open to provide all support within its means to facilitate a lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy said India and Ukraine are actively developing relations and working together to strengthen cooperation across various fields. "The main focus of our conversation was on enhancing our interaction on international platforms, particularly at the UN and G20, as well as implementing the Peace Formula and preparing for the second Peace Summit. I am grateful for the clear support of our sovereignty and territorial integrity," Zelenskyy said on X, formerly Twitter. Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Vikram Misri said this was the third meeting between the two leaders in a little over three months.
Significantly, Prime Minister Modi today concluded the "successful and intense" three-day visit to the US, where he took part in the Quad Leaders' Summit in Delaware on Friday and held bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden, as well as his Australian and Japanese counterparts. He also held bilateral meetings with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Kuwait Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, among several other leaders.
Further, Modi addressed the Indian community in Long Island, New York, and interacted with the chief executive officers of leading tech companies. At a round table with the tech giants, Modi shared his thoughts about the new policies coming into play in India aimed at the growth of the technology sector. "The second edition of the India Semiconductor Mission is under works. Modi invited tech companies to be a part of this exciting journey..." Misri said.
On Monday, Modi spoke at the "Summit of the Future" at the UN General Assembly in New York, where he said that reforms in global institutions are important for global peace and development.
