Unemployment among women rises to 3.2% in 2023-24 vs 2.9% in 2022-23

NEW DELHI – The rate of unemployment among women rose to 3.2% in the period 2023-24 (Jul-Jun), from 2.9% a year ago, as per the statistics ministry's annual report on the Periodic Labour Force Survey. The rise was because unemployment among rural women increased to 2.1% from 1.8% in 2022-23.

 

The rate of unemployment in women in urban areas fell to 7.1% in 2023-24 from 7.5% a year ago. The overall unemployment rate was 3.2% during the period, unchanged from 2022-23.

 

The unemployment rate is the percentage of unemployed people in the total labour force.

 

Among men, the unemployment rate fell to 3.2% in 2023-24 from 3.3% a year ago. This was due to a decline in their unemployment rate in urban areas to 4.4% from 4.7% in 2022-23. The unemployment rate among men in rural areas was 2.7%, the same as a year ago.

 

The statistics ministry's report is based on a survey of people aged 15 or above. "For the purpose of this report, educated persons are defined as those who have attained the educational level of secondary and above. Normally, one can attain this educational level at the age of 15 years or above," the report said.

 

The ratio of employed persons in the population rose to 58.2% in 2023-24 from 56% a year ago. While the worker population ratio among men increased marginally to 76.3% in 2023-24, from 76% in 2022-23, it jumped to 40.3% among women, from 35.9% in the year-ago period.

 

The percentage of people in the labour force rose to 60.1% in 2023-24, from 57.9% a year ago. The labour force participation rate includes those who are working as well as those who are seeking work or are available to work. The labour force participation rate among men was 78.8% in 2023-24, compared to 78.5% in 2022-23. It rose to 41.7% among women, from 37% a year ago.  End
